YRC Nepal Himalayan 1957

With many of the members having been passed over for the major expeditions of the early 1950s, the YRC elected to put together their own expedition to the Himalaya. Based on the report of the 1955 Ladies Scottish Climbing Club, they elected to visit the Jugal Himal and attempt the mountain which the LSCC team had dubbed "The Great White Peak". From a basecamp next to the Phurbi Chyachumba Glacier, the pary succeeded in establishing a series of four camps on the mountain. Returning from a rotation above camp IV to complete surveying work on the area, Spenceley, Fox, Mingma Tenzing and Lakpa Noorbu were caught in an avalanche which dumped them into a crevasse. Of the four, only Spenceley survived.
