Trans Himalayan River
This expedition aimed to undertake the first 'benchmark' survey of the Himalayan environment by following the Arun River from the Tibetan plateau to the edge of the Ganges plain. However, the crossing from Nepal to Tibet being closed, the programme had to be modified, and the final route followed the course of the Arun and Barun rivers backwards from the lowlands (495m) to the high mountains and a glacier above Makalu base camp (4,700m). High river flows may have made some of the results unrepresentative.
