Scottish Trans-Greenland 1965
The expedition crossed Greenland from Angmagssalik on the east coast to Christianshaab on the west. All four members made the journey to Søndre Strømfjord by ski, with the three memn completing the remainder of the journey by canoe/portage. During the expedition, the participants took regular samples of urine which, upon return to Scotland, were anlaysed for 17-hydroxycortico-steroid, a marker of adrenal activity. Analysis of these samples demonstrated that levels of stress remained high throughoughout the journey (though they changed in line with the level of difficulty encountered) and did not drop off following an initial surge as had been theorised. Subsequent base measurements back home also showed high levels of adrenal activity in the participant's day-to-day lives which was felt by the research lead to reflect the stress of daily western life.
