Khumbu Valley Meltwater Sampling
The devastating flooding and landslides which occurred in Nepal in late September 2024 disrupted this expedition's travel plans and prevented Sandesh Tamang from taking part in the project as planned. Despite these difficulties, Graves was able to make alternative travel arrangements and to successfully collect the required water samples from the Khumbu valley. A lack of rain during the expedition meant rain samples could not be collected, but enough river and glacier melt samples were recovered to meet the scientific aims. Stable isotope analysis of these samples will be completed in London. In addition, Graves was also able to perform essential maintenance on the Phortse weather station, allowing it to begin collecting data again, and for that data to be recovered and transmitted at regular intervals.
