British Joint Services Everest W Ridge Expedition
This very large party of 36 officers and men approached Everest by the Rongbuk glacier, intending to climb the mountain by the W ridge. They made three bids for the summit, one group of two reaching c8,600m, the other climbers, 25 in all, turning back at c7,800m after the crux of the Hornbein Couloir.
